I Don’t Want To
Collaboration with Mel Chin. I met Mel in the Spring of 2005. We began the collaboration in the early summer of that year. Then Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans (where my home and studio are). By October the project with Mr Chin resumed. I’d usually spend a month + at his studio in NC, go back to New Orleans to rebuild, and then back to NC studio. The project took a year and I had any where from 2 – 5 people helping me build this platter. The piece is about the Mayan peoples of Mexico, their enslavement by the Spaniards during the conquest of the Yucatan and subsequently the things they did to express themselves during their suppression. This is a description from Mel Chin on what the piece is about: It’s not a game. Violence and poverty sent them North. Their service comes with sacrifice.
It is currently in the collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA)
