Suspicion Breeds Confidence
With a dystopian concept and a New Orleans flare, the title of the piece was taken from the movie “Brazil”. One of the scenes shows workers milling around a factory setting. In the background a sign reads “Suspicion Breeds Confidence”. I used the small round window in the sculpture to represent a peep hole. Stretched behind an innocuous assemblage of dilapidated weatherboard is an American flag – a stand-in for ‘government’. The pale facade represents patriotism – hand-over-the-heart, pledge allegiance kind of banter. The shrewd beauty of the American system is that by violating a taboo of bringing “patriotism” into question; surveillance on a federal, state, and local level is transformed into an indisputable exploit.
